What is Hidden Heroes?
Hidden Heroes is a campaign through the Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement (GLISI) that recognizes educators who make a difference in Georgia's education system. The campaign highlights educators who go above and beyond to inspire students and persevere in their work. The campaign launched in October 2020 and is now in its fifth year. The public can nominate and vote for educators they believe are Hidden Heroes in their community.

🤝 In partnership with the Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia, Polk School District is proud to announce that 75 staff members have completed Seizure First Aid training!
In an effort to better serve our students and families, Polk School District had 75 staff members from the school and district level participate in Seizure First Aid Training. This team includes nurses, classroom teachers, transportation representatives, and administrative staff. At the end of the session, participants had the opportunity to take an assessment leading to a Seizure First Aid certification, valid for two years. 🏅
In July 2023, AJ's Law went into effect in Georgia, requiring public schools to implement seizure action plans submitted by parents or guardians and train staff on seizure first aid. Before the training began, AJ Taylor joined us to share his inspiring story and explain why he advocated for this important law named in his honor.
Through this training, we’ve expanded our district's ability to care for our students in every situation. Learn more about the Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia and AJ’s Law here: https://epilepsyga.org/

🌊 Gifted Students Explore Jekyll Island! 🦈🐢
We had an incredible experience taking 40 gifted 5th-grade students from all six of our elementary schools to the Jekyll Island 4H Center for a three-day environmental education adventure! 🎉 This trip was designed to align with 5th-grade science and social studies standards while giving our students the chance to meet and bond with students from across Polk County.
Highlights of the trip included:
🌿 Learning about the plants and animals of the maritime ecosystem
🦈 Shark dissections
🐢 Visiting the Georgia Sea Turtle Center
🔬 Engaging in hands-on learning
In addition to academic learning, this experience allowed our students to further develop skills such as independence, responsibility, and teamwork through tasks like taking care of their cabins and working together on Kitchen-Patrol (KP) duties! 💪
We hope to make this an annual experience as a capstone to the elementary gifted program, and we can’t wait to return in the fall of 2025! 🌟
A special thanks to our Advanced Learners Specialist, Holly Amerman, and all of our Gifted teachers that helped to make this opportunity available to our students!
