Welcome to 7th grade Life Science. My name is Mrs. Carol Austin and I would like to welcome all my students to an exciting year of learning and exploration in Science. Our curriculum will follow the Science Georgia Standards of Excellence and will include the diversity of living organisms and how they can be compared scientifically, cell structures, cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems and how they interact to maintain the basic needs of organisms, sexual and asexual reproduction and the transfer of genetic information, and how it is used to determine the traits of offspring, the interdependence of organisms with one another and their environments, and the theory of evolution of living organisms through inherited characteristics. Each unit integrates STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) resources and lab experiences using the process of inquiry and the scientific method. In addition, students will strengthen their writing skills through frequent writing opportunities and projects.
Please sign up for my "Remind" messages. This tool will be used weekly to keep parents and students aware of class assignments and due dates. Sign-up information will be available during open house and sent home on the first day of school. In addition, sign-up information can be found on my online classroom.
I believe that learning is a physiological activity involving the whole body. The best way to engage a student is to have a solid classroom management plan and a well-planned lesson that is grounded in relevant, purposeful activities designed to enhance that student's knowledge and skills and leave her or him wanting to learn more. Teachers should be strongly aligned with student-centered and student-directed learning that embraces exploration, discovery, experiential learning, and the production of academically rigorous products.
As for me, I graduated from Cedartown High School in 1975. I am a 1990 graduate of Berry College with a Bachelor's degree in Middle Grades Education. I obtained my Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Phoenix in 2008, and my Education Specialist degree in Curriculum and Teaching in 2011 from Nova Southeastern University. I hold concentrations in Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies with Life Science being my most favorite subject to teach. I also serve as science department head at RMS.
This year will mark my 30th year in the classroom. I began my teaching career in the Polk School District in 1990 in Cedartown. During my career I have taught in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. I have been teaching 7th grade Science for over 20 years. I began working at Rockmart Middle School in 2006. I am married to Gary Austin and we make our home in Rockmart.
I look forward to getting to know all my students and their families. We have a lot of exciting new things happening at RMS. I encourage all my parents to get involved with their child's education. Feel free to contact me anytime. I LOVE life science and I hope to get my students as excited to learn as I am to teach. Again WELCOME to 7th grade!!!!!!. Go Jackets!!!!!!!!
