Northside Media Center Information

CHS Media Center

How do I locate items in the media center?

Non-fiction (true stories, informational texts) These type of books are organized by the Dewey Decimal System (a number system in which books about similar subjects are grouped on the shelf together). In the CHS Media Center, all nonfiction materials are in order from 0 to 999. The spine of each nonfiction book will be labeled with a number and an author's last name.

Fiction (stories that are not true) The books are alphabetized by the author’s last names. If you do not know an author’s name, ask the media specialist for assistance. The spine of each fiction book will be lableled with the letter “F” and an author's last name.

Reference (informational books) These books are organized by the Dewey Decimal System. In the CHS Media Center, these books are only accessible in the media center.  The reference section includes the following:  dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs, atlases. The spine of each reference book will have the letter “R” and a number based on the Dewey Decimal System.

  • Dictionary—spelling, pronunciation, part of speech, origin, definition, and usage examples of words
  • Encyclopedia— information about different topics
  • Atlas—maps
  • Almanac—quick facts about a variety of information (ex. Population of a country, stats of a ball player, number of visits to a theme park, etc)

Biography (history of a person's life written or told by someone other than the person) Biographies are clasified under the Dewey Decimal System. Books in the 920's are group biographies and the 921's are individual biographies. The 920 books are arranged by the last name of the author. The 921's books are arranged by the last name of the person of the book. The spine of each biography has 920/921 and the last name of the person.

Short Stories (books with more than one story) These books have multiple stories; some of them have stories by the same author, while others have stories by a variety of authors. Short stories are arranged alphabetically by the last name of the author if there is only one author; if there is more than one author, the book is alphabetized by the title. The spine of each short story has “SC” and an author's name/title.

Georgia Peach Award Books (books receiving an award from UGA) These books are located on a special shelf near the fiction section.  They are arranged by the author’s last name.  The spine of these books has an “F” and a name on it for fiction books, or a number and name for non-fiction books.

Everyone Section (books for everyone!) These books are located near the fiction books. These books are fun for everybody! The spine has an “E” and a number/tiltle on it.
