Engage New York - Module 1 -
Place Value, Rounding, and Algorithms for Addition and Subtraction
The following link will allow you to see the activities that your child will be engaged in during math class. These are Common Core based units that meet the rigor in preparation of the new Georgia Milestones Assessment. Students will work through these in class individual and in whole group lessons. We will fill in and review with activities from the Georgia Performance Standards units. The student pages are in a notebook that I have created for them to have in class. These materials will remain in the classroom for them to have daily. You are welcome to stop by at anytime to review their notebook. You will see this is much more complex than a multiple choice worksheet.

Standards covered in unit 1
Numbers and Operations
Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right.
For example, recognize that 700 ÷ 70 = 10 by
applying concepts of place value and division.
Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. Compare two multi
digit numbers based on meanings of the digits in each place, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.
Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place.
Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.
Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
Algebra and Operations
Solve multi step word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted.
Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.

|Currently, we are still working on addition and subtraction to the millions place.
||Next week I hope to wrap up addition and subtraction.
