Differentiated Reading Groups

I am very excited about the reading program we are implementing at Westside this year. EIP teachers will be working closely with the ELA teachers to reach students exactly where they have shown a weakness.

At the beginning of the school year,  every child was assessed with the DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) and IDI (Informal Decoding Inventory) asessments. Upon completion of this process, every child was placed into a differentiated reading group, within their ELA classroom, based on where he/she plateaued during testing. Each Differentiated Reading Group focuses on a specific skill, therefore, each child is receiving instruction at his/her own level. These groups will have a brief assessment every 15 days, then the students have the opportunity to advance to the next group. The goal is for each child to progress through the continuum and reach fluency/comprehension (on grade level reading and comprehension). While these groups are only one portion of the instruction received in the ELA block of the classroom, I feel they will be very beneficial.

We have worked very hard to get all the reading kits ready and we are fully implementing the program, alongside the ELA teacher. I am very excited about the possibilities of this program, and look forward to seeing great growth with all the children.

Please look further into each skill on the continuum, shown on the left side of my online classroom, for specific activities related to each group.
