Hello! I am Rebecca Akins and I am a British and Amercian Literature teacher at Cedartown High School. This is my first year at CHS, but my fourth year in Polk School District. I am very excited about this school year and am looking forward to the many opportunities working at the high school level will bring. This will be my seventh year teaching over all. I spent three of those years at Cedartown Middle School teaching 7th grade ELA. I loved every minute of it.  My other background is in private school in Louisiana, but I am happy to be back in Georgia and in the public school system. I graduated from Truett McConnell University in Cleveland, GA with a Bachelors degree in History and a minor in English. I am almost done with my Masters in Education from Walden University. I should be done by the end of this school year. My husband and I live the Cedartown area. We have been here for a little over three years. We love being a part of this community. We do not have any children, but we do have an amazing dog, Ollie. I am so thankful for the privilege of teaching in Polk School District and cannot wait to see what the future holds.

My Teaching Philosophy:

My philosophy of teaching is based on a belief that learning needs to be student centered and that students need to be equal partners in the learning process. I believe that all students can learn. It is my job to create an environment that is made for learning and to uphold the standards of integrity and respect in all things. I am not just teaching to help a student graduate; I am teaching to make an impact on our future. Every student who walks in my door has a purpose in life and has possibilities. It is my job to help them realize their potential and to achieve their goals. I will challenge them, hold them to a higher standard, and make them think for themselves. This will help prepare them for a future either the workforce or in higher education. “Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.” -Margaret Mead
