The Civil War

Causes:
Slavery and States' Rights (10th Amendment)

North said slavery should end; South said it was the right of each state to have slaves or not.

2 people who 'fueled' the war:
Harriet Beecher Stowe
(wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin; abolitionist) , and

John Brown (violent abolitionist; stormed the arsenal at Harper's Ferry; hanged for it)

The Civil War started following the election of Abraham Lincoln as president, when South Carolina seceded, or withdrew, from the United States (Union); it was soon followed by other southern states, who formed the Confederate States of America and elected Jefferson Davis as their president.

  • Ft. Sumter, SC

FORT = FIRST; First battle of the Civil War

Confederate victory, although no soldiers were killed on either side

  • Gettysburg, Penn.
(Gettys-Burg = "Go Back!"  Go back home, rebels, and get out of the North!)

Confederates invade North

Turning point; Union victory

Embarassing loss for Robert E. Lee

Lincoln gives Gettysburg Address days later

  • Atlanta Campaign / March to the Sea

Sherman's battles against the Confederate Army from Chattanooga, TN, to Atlanta, GA

Atlanta Campaign ends with the burning of Atlanta; March to the Sea begins

Sherman's Union Army burns crops, destroys railroads and supply lines

Savannah, GA surrenders to Sherman

Appomattox Court House, VA

Robert E. Lee and Confederates surrounded; surrenders to Ulysses S. Grant
