How Do I Find Stuff in the RHS Media Center?

RHS Media Center—Where do I find Stuff?

Non-fiction (true stories, informational texts)—These books are organized by the Dewey Decimal System (a number system in which books about similar subjects are grouped on the shelf together). In the RHS Media Center, there are labels on each non-fiction shelf to tell you which books are on each shelf. The spine label has a number and a name on it.

Fiction (stories that are not true)—The books are alphabetized by the author’s last names (they are not arranged by subject, so for example, all vampire books are not grouped).  If you do not know an author’s name, use the online card catalog or ask the media specialist. The spine label has an “F” and a name on it.

Reference (informational books)—These books are organized by the Dewey Decimal System. In the RHS Media Center, these books cannot be checked out.  This section includes dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs, atlases. The spine label has an “R,” a number, and a name on it.

  • Dictionary—spelling, pronunciation, part of speech, origin, definition, and usage examples of words
  • Encyclopedia— information about different topics
  • Atlas—maps
  • Almanac—quick facts about a variety of information (ex. Population of a country, stats of a ball player, number of visits to a theme park, etc)

Biographies (book about a famous person or group of people)—These books are often separate from other nonfiction books (920 are group biographies and 921 are individual biographies).  The 920 books are arranged by the last name of the author. Individual biographies are arranged by the last name of the subject of the book.  The spine label has a number and a name on it.

Short Stories (books with more than one story)—These books have multiple stories; some of them have stories by the same author, while others have stories by different authors. They are arranged alphabetically by the last name of the author if there is only one author; if there is more than one author, the book is alphabetized by the title. The spine label has “SC” and a name on it.

Georgia Peach Award Books (books receiving an award from UGA)—These books are located on a special shelf near the fiction section.  They are arranged by the author’s last name.  The spine label has an “F” and a name on it for fiction books, or a number and name on it for non-fiction books.

Everyone Section (books for everyone!)—These books are located on a special shelf near the fiction books—look underneath the green plant. These books are fun for everybody! The spine label has an “E” and either a number or a name on it.
