Reading Focus of the Week

For the week of 12/11/2017, our interactive read aloud is Do I Need It? or Do I Want It? This story teaches students the differences between needs and wants.  It also helps students understand the differences between goods and services.  Students will get to pretend they have a budget to spend and work with their group to determine how they will spend it.

For the week of 12/11/2017, our shared story is Morris Goes to School.  We will practice reading this story by echo reading, choral reading, and partner reading.

We are still working hard in our guided reading groups. Your child should be bringing home a printed booklet to read. Please remember to send it back each day so that we can use it in class. If there is a check in the top corner of the book, your child can keep the book at home. All groups are not on the same reader. Thanks for your help making your child a successful reader!

Helpful suggestions: When your child gets stuck on an unfamiliar word, get him/her to sound out and blend the sounds together out loud. Ask him or her to reread sentences to help with fluency and comprehension. Say-spell-say is a great way to practice spelling words, and any game that requires your child to race to a new speed with sight words is always beneficial.

1st grade goal: 24 WCPM (by Dec.) / 47 WCPM (by May)

Students should be able to read 47 WCPM by leaving first grade.
