What to do When You Read a Story

While you are reading with your child ask him/her some of the following questions:

Questions to ask before reading:

  • What is the title of the book?
  • What do you think the book is about? (look at the cover & make a prediction)

Questions to ask during reading:

  • What do you think will happen next?
  • What was that page about?

Questions to ask after reading:

  • Describe the setting of the story.
  • Who were the main characters?
  • Which of the characters did you like best? Why?
  • Was there a problem in the story?  How was the problem solved?
  • How is this story similar to something that has happened in your life?
