Course Description:

This course introduces both fundamental theory and practices of the personal care professions including nail technicians, estheticians, barbers, and cosmetologists. Emphasis will be placed on professional practices and safety. Areas addressed in this course include: state rules and regulations, professional image, bacteriology, decontamination and infection control, chemistry fundamentals, safety, Hazardous Duty Standards Act compliance, and anatomy and physiology. Students will experience basic hands on skills in each area to help them determine the pathway they are most interested in pursuing. By completing courses in the personal care services pathways, students can potentially earn credit toward the hours required by the Georgia State Board of Barbering and/or Cosmetology or hours toward their license as an esthetician or nail technician. Pre-requisite for this course is advisor approval.

Topics Covered:

  1. Demonstrate Employability Skills required by business and industry
  2. Exhibit critical thinking and problem solving skills
  3. Explore career opportunities and economic trends in the Personal Care industry
  4. Identify and evaluate state laws, rules, and regulations 
  5. Display a professional appearance and role play appropriate interaction with clients in the Personal Care services
  6. Evaluate and apply the regulations of infection control
  7. Demonstrate proper safety procedures and accident prevention 
  8. Understand Basic Chemistry fundamentals and applications 
  9. Demonstrate working knowledge of anatomy as it relates to skills in Cosmetology, Barbering, Esthetics, and Nails 
  10. 10. Explore and demonstrate basic technical skills

Materials Needed:

Pen, pencil and paper 

Various lab materials 

Grading Policy:

Participation, Labs and Projects = 50% 

Objective Assessments= 20% 

Final Exam = 10% 

Employability Skills=20%

Class Policies/Rules:

All policies of the Polk School District Board of Education and student handbook will be enforced.

 

This is a professional class. Any actions, attitudes, or language that is not professional will not be tolerated.

Make-up Work and  Re-Test Policy:

For each grading period, makeup work must be completed no later than two weeks after progress reports are issued. Students may not make up work outside of the grading period window once the time has passed. 

Re-Test Policy:  

  • Students are allowed to retest one test per quarter, per subject.
  • Retest can earn full credit.
  • This retest policy does not include final exams or benchmark assessments.
  • Remediation is required from teacher or Directed Studies.
  • If close to half or more of the class fails, the material is to be retaught and the test given again for full credit.

Exam Exemption:

For 2017-18, students must have an 80 average or above with not more than 3 absences. Any and all exemption policies do not apply to EOCTs, AP/MOWR exams or other PSD mandated examinations.

Late Assignment Policy:

Students are expected to turn in all completed assignments at the time scheduled by the teacher. Any assignment turned in late will result in a ten point deduction per day late in the grade.

Homework Policy:

Students are required to complete homework and turn in the completed assignments when requested. Failure to turn in homework will result in a 10 point deduction per day late in the grade.
