Course Description:

Sports Medicine is the third course in the Therapeutic Services/Sports Medicine Career Pathway. The course is appropriate for students who wish to pursue a career in healthcare with a focus on the musculoskeletal system, injury assessment, injury prevention, or rehabilitation including careers in Sports Medicine and Rehabilitative Services. This course will enable students to receive initial exposure to therapeutic services skills and attitudes applicable to the healthcare industry. The concepts of anatomy and physiology, assessment, preventative and rehabilitative care are introduced. Fundamental healthcare skills development is initiated, including medical terminology, kinesiology, patient assessment, record keeping, and basic life support. The prerequisites for this course are Introduction to Healthcare and Essentials of Healthcare.

Course Requirements:

Topics Covered:

  1. Employability skills required by business and industry.

  2. Analyze anatomic positions, directional terms, movements, and postures as related to the appendicular skeleton.

  3. Utilize correct terminology, abbreviations, symbols and practices to appropriately communicate oral and written information within the physical medicine setting.

  4. Demonstrate injury classifications and evaluations.

  5. Analyze and describe the basic principles and concepts of healing.

  6. Demonstrate the steps of Basic Life Support (BLS) with Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Assess and manage patients with bleeding, bony injuries, soft tissue as well as musculoskeletal injuries.

  7. Identify and describe pathogens commonly encountered in physical medicine and demonstrate appropriate infection control principles.

  8. Analyze the anatomy, muscular structure, vascular structure, Range of Motion (ROM), Manual Muscle Tests (MMT) and special tests, as well as prevention and treatment, of the upper extremity

  9. Analyze the anatomy, muscular structure, vascular structure, Range of Motion (ROM), Manual Muscle Tests (MMT) and special tests, as well as prevention and treatment, of the lower extremity

  10. Analyze the anatomy, muscular structure, vascular structure, and describe the mechanisms signs and symptoms and potential complications associated with head and facial injuries.

  11. Analyze the anatomy, muscular structure, vascular structure, ROM, MMT and special tests, as well as prevention and treatment, of the spine.

  12. Analyze the anatomy, muscular structure, vascular structure, ROM, and special tests, as well as prevention and treatment, of the thoracic and abdominal regions.

  13. Evaluate the importance of nutrition in physical medicine

  14. Demonstrate the process for basic assessment (i.e. vital signs, height, weight, etc.), monitoring, and reporting/recording patient/client’s health status.

  15. Analyze and describe the basic principles and concepts of rehabilitation

  16. Analyze and describe the principles of pharmacology.

  17. Analyze and describe the appropriate use of therapeutic modalities.

Grading Policy:

Participation, Labs and Projects = 50%

Objective Assessments= 20%

Final Exam = 10%

Employability Skills=20%

Class Policies/Rules:

All policies of the Polk School District Board of Education and student handbook will be enforced.

 

This is a professional class. Any actions, attitudes, or language that is not professional will not be accepted.

Make-up Work Policy:

For each grading period, makeup work must be completed no later than two weeks after progress reports are issued. Students may not make up work outside of the grading period window once the time has passed.

 

Re-Test Policy:

• Students are allowed to retest one test per quarter, per subject.

• Retest can earn full credit.

• This retest policy does not include final exams or benchmark assessments.

• Remediation is required from teacher or Directed Studies. • If close to half or more of the class fails, the material is to be retaught and the test given again for full credit.

Exam Exemption:

For 2017-18, students must have an 80 average or above with not more than 3 absences. Any and all exemption policies do not apply to EOCTs, AP/MOWR exams or other PSD mandated examinations.

Late Assignment Policy:

Students are expected to turn in all completed assignments at the time scheduled by the teacher. Any assignment turned in late will result in a ten point deduction per day late in the grade.

Homework Policy:

Students are required to complete homework and turn in the completed assignments when requested. Failure to turn in homework will result in a 10 point deduction per day late in the grade.
