AMDM Syllabus, Grading Criteria and Class Rules

Advanced Math Decision Making (AMDM) is a course designed to help students learn to apply the math they already know. The standards are listed on the Ga. DoE web site under math standards. We have no text book

GRADING

Attendance in class is mandatory. There will be written tests and class presentations as assessments. We plan for roughly 8-10 assessments in the first semester including the first semester exam and 5-6 in the second semester and a separate final exam. Just as a student would not skip a test neither should they skip verbal or visual presentations.  Any written tests can be made up/re-tested as per the PSD/CHS testing policy.

Weekly launchers will be graded about 20 times out of our 37 weeks. Each set of a full weeks’ launchers will count as a single daily grade. The exception to this is that some launchers (12-15 times in the entire year) will be graded individually as daily grades. No one is required or allowed to make-up launchers. Excused absenses/tardies are exempted from that portion of the weekly daily grade and all others, including unexcused tardies, will receive a zero as their score. We will have daily grades for work done in class and there will be homework. If any work is turned in late it receives a maximum score of 70%. Additionally, any non-launcher assignment can be redone for a late score and thereby raised to a 70%. No specific extra credit work will be generated. There is extra credit available on almost every assessment and on many daily assignments. 

We explore six basic topics: Probability, Statistics, Finance, Analyzing Numerical Data, Networks and Graphs, and Models in Decision Making. We start with Numerical Data and Probability in the first semester and follow with Finance and Statistics in the second semester. The other topics are incorporated into our work on the first four listed.

CLASSROOM RULES

The basic rules of polite society apply. You are seniors in High School and should not need to be reminded of them.

Additionally we have electronic devices, issued and personal. There are times to use them and times NOT to use them. If you have a real need to use your phone in class ASK FIRST. Teachers are reasonable people. This is a touchy area and policy is set to ensure the best learning environment for all students.

My general policy is that if you have an “A” in this class you may use your device anytime you are working alone. If someone is actively teaching you are NOT to be on ANY electronic device unless that is directly a part of the lesson being taught right then. If you are working in a group you should not be on your device for any reason other than the group’s work and this includes listening to music. We will use an electronic submission for a lot of our Launchers, make sure you can submit the required information properly. Have your device charged and ready to go when you get to class. Room 510 has multiple electrical outlets where you can work on and/or charge your device if needed. When info is to be submitted on Showbie, do so. Do not ask to put it on paper. Remember your Showbie login so you can use someone else’s device if all of your devices are nonfunctional or absent. Class is in session from bell to bell. Unless you are told otherwise you should not be using your devices for anything other than classroom assignments until the bell rings. “But I’m done!” is NOT a reason that allows you to use your device even one minute before the bell rings. If you have ear buds in your ears we will assume that you are listening to sound on a device.

Consequences. If and when a person in authority asks for any of your electronic devices, including ear phones/buds, I expect you to surrender it/them immediately and cheerfully. No excuses are accepted and there will be no immediate discussion. We will talk about it one-on-one before class is over.

First/second violation: The device will usually be put into the red plastic holder with clear pockets on the closet door. The device may be picked up as you go out the door to your next class and not before. If you choose to make excuses, complain or refuse the first request your device may go to the office but at a minimum will be locked up for the day.

Third violation: The device will be locked in my closet and you may come get it at the end of the day. Get here early, I have bus duty every third week and if you do not catch me you can either stay until I return to the room or you may get your divice the next AM. You have the option of asking me to take it to the front office and telling them of your actions. You may then pick up your device there at the end of the day.

Further needed discipline in this area will result in an office referral as you are asked to leave class.  

If any of these rules seem harsh or unfair feel free to leave your personal electronic devices in your car or with the front office. Your issued i-pads have plenty of capability to help you succeed in Math class.
