We have started our guided reading groups this week. Your child should be bringing home a printed booklet to read. Please remember to send it back each day so that we can use it in class. If there is a check in the top corner of the book, your child can keep the book at home. All groups are not on the same reader. Thanks for your help making your child a successful reader!
Helpful suggestions: When your child gets stuck on an unfamiliar word, get him/her to sound out and blend the sounds together out loud. Ask him or her to reread sentences to help with fluency and comprehension. Say-spell-say is a great way to practice spelling words, and any game that requires your child to race to a new speed with sight words is always beneficial.
1st grade goal: 24 WCPM (by Dec.) / 47 WCPM (by May)
Students should be able to read 47 WCPM by leaving first grade.
