The 2018 Polk County Special Olympics will be held Friday May 4th at the Nathan Dean Park in Rockmart, Georgia. The rain date for the event will be Monday May 7th. The physicals will be completed at the Rockmart and Cedartown schools and Cedarsprings Rehabilitation by Redmond EMS and Janet Ross, NP during the month of February. Students are required to complete a physical every 3 years in order to participate in the Special Olympics event. The guidelines for the upcoming event are posted below:

**Special Olympics at the local level is designed to provide: peer interaction, motivation, and to boost self-esteem.**

 

1. PROGRAM: Polk County Special Olympics is an athletic competition for individuals with disabilities. It provides competition at all levels of ability by assessing “competition divisions” based on both age and performance. Even athletes in the lowest divisions may advance.

2. PURPOSE: The organization shall accomplish its mission by providing:

a)         Opportunities for physical fitness, sports training and athletic competition and recreation through local programs.

b)        Materials, information, and technical assistance to organizations and individuals interested in establishing similar programs for persons with disabilities.

c)         Training programs for professionals and parents interested in the physical and athletic development of people with disabilities.

d)        Opportunities for the general public to gain a deeper understanding of individuals with disabilities, and to promote the expansion of agencies and qualified persons who are dedicated to the service of individuals with disabilities and their families.

3. PARTICIPATION: Eligible participants are individuals who, on the basis of local assessment and evaluation, have been assigned to programs designed to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities. Participants enrolled in Polk School District should be between the ages of pre-school and twenty-one years of age and served under the following exceptionalities: MI, MOID, PID/SID, SDD, Autism, TBI, and VI/HI.  Adults participating from Cedar Springs Rehabilitation are eighteen years and older. Participants whom are home schooled within the community are allowed to participate if the individual falls within the guidelines. If participants are from outside the school system the committee must be contacted prior to the event to ensure appropriate paperwork is completed.

4. Other Exceptionalities allowed to participate at Principal/Teacher discretion: SLD and OHI.

4. COMPETITIONS:            Running Events, Softball Throw, and Running Long Jump

5. POLICIES: All participants must have a current Application for Participation on file with the SOGA office. Students will be provided with transportation and a physical by a licensed doctor free of charge (For 1 day only-Date and Time TBA).

6. General Questions:        

a).       Transportation is provided to physicals and the day of the Special Olympics. The ONLY way a student can be transported by their parents is with a note signed by their principal in advance.

b).       Lunch is provided free of charge to all athletes, teachers, and student volunteers on the day of Special Olympics.

c).        Shirts are provided free of charge to all athletes, teachers, and student volunteers on the day of Special Olympics.

d).      Supervision is a MUST for students. Each school must send supervision for the students participating.

e).       Students participating in the wheel-chair event must be pushed by parent or parent-appointed adult. If a parent-appointed adult will be pushing consent form must be signed in advance.
