Class Launcher: Free Write Friday! What's on your mind? 

Standards: ELAGSE9-10RL2: Determine a theme and/or central idea of text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text. ELAGSE9-10RL3: Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations) develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or develop the theme. ELAGSE9-10W1: Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence. 

EQ: How does the character development contribute to the theme of the book and move the plot forward?

Teaching and Learning Strategies: You will complete the summative assessment for TKAM Chapters 1-11. You will have an oportunity to re-test.  There are NO test corrections for this test.  Take your time. 

Bring your test to the front when you have finished. Sit quietly (silently) and begin reading Chapter 12 TKAM (116-128). By the end of Monday, you are responsible for reading through page 136. Stay focused.

Chapter 12 Questions: 

  • Comment on Jem's and Scout's visit to First Purchase church. 
  • What new things does Scout learn here about how the black people live? 
  • What does Scout learn from Calpurnia's account of Zeebo's education? 
  • Explain why Calpurnia speaks differently in the Finch household, and among her neighbours at church.

Summarizer: Thinking back on the chapter questions. Did you put enough effort into answering Chapter 1-11 questions thoroughly?  Rate yourself 1-5 (with five being the best).
