Welcome Letter

“Building a Better World”

 to 2nd grade!

School Day
Students should be at school by 7:40.  If they plan to eat breakfast at school, they should arrive earlier.  Teachers will pick students up from the gym  at 7:45.  Afternoon announcements/dismissal will begin at 2:50.

Supplies
You will need to supply pencils and crayons for your child throughout the year.  Please check with your child frequently to make sure he/she has these at school. It’s a good idea to provide your child with a pencil box or pencil bag to keep these in.  It is very helpful if each child also brings their own scissors.  We use a tremendous amount of Kleenex and hand sanitizer.  If you can donate any of these items we would be very grateful J

Book bags
Each student needs a book bag.  Please write their name somewhere on the bag.

Breakfast/Lunch
Breakfast and lunch will be available for all students free of charge.  Students must eat breakfast BEFORE coming to the classroom.

Reading & Math
We will be using the Comprehensive Reading Solutions reading program again this year.  Students will need to practice reading 15 min. each night.  They may read their library book or other reading material they have at home. This is very important,  as it improves their reading fluency and comprehension.  Second grade will not be switching classes this year.

Ice Cream
We will not be selling ice cream this year.

News/Information
All teachers have an Online Classroom.  You can access these by visiting www.polk.k12.ga.us  Go to “schools”—choose “Van Wert”—go to “teacher websites”—choose your child’s teacher.  Here you will find information about your child’s classroom, skills we are working on, and educational games for extra practice.

Traffic Light
To help students become more responsible for their own behavior, we use a traffic light (clothespins).  Each child has a clothespin with his/her name on it.  We begin the day with all clothespins on the orange light.(ready to learn)  The goal is to reach the green light (awesome) each day.  They can accomplish this by being a model student and following directions.  If a student needs to be corrected for their behavior more than twice, they move their clothespin to the red light to caution them to think more carefully about their actions.  When on the red light, the student loses 5 min. of recess.  If another infraction occurs, they move their clothespin to blue and will miss all of recess for that day.  We have recess for 15 min. each day.

Agendas
Each child will have an agenda.  We will use the agenda to write homework in and communicate with parents.  Please feel free to write notes to me as well.  It is very important for students to bring agendas to school each day. They must have their agenda to visit the nurse.

Headphones/Ear buds
We use these DAILY in the classroom.  Headphones seem to work better and last longer.  Please make sure your child has either headphones or ear buds the first day of school.

We look forward to having a great year with you & your child.  Feel free to visit our
classrooms anytime!

Retesting Policy
Please make sure to read the new retesting policy in the student handbook.

We look forward to a great year!
