Social Studies/Science Focus of the Week


During this exciting unit of study students will learn about the explorers of the American frontier and how their contributions shaped the United States.

Standards addressed in this unit are:

ELACC1RF4: Read with sufficent accuracy to support comprehension.

a. Read on-level text with purpose and understanding.

b. Read on-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings.

c. Use context to confirm or self correct word recognition and understanding,rereading as necessary.

SS1H1: The student will read about and describe the life of historical figures in American history.

a. Identify the contributions made by these figures; Benjamin Franklin (inventor, author, statesman), Thomas Jefferson (Declaration of Independence), Meriwether Lewis and William Clark with Sacagewa (exploration).

SS1CG1: The student will describe how the historical figures on SS1H1a display positive character traits of fairness, respect for others, respect for the environment, conservation, courage,equality,tolerance,perserverance and commitment.

c. Identify and describe landforms (mountains,deserts,plains,plateaus and coasts).
