Kindergarten News

During the month of September, your child may have been screened to determine if they qualified for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) services.  If your child qualified for English Second Language (ESL) classes you should have received a notification letter from the school. ESL programs are provided to assist students who need to learn English for academic success in school.

Your child will attend ESL class everyday for 45-50 minutes.  During this time, your child will receive instructional support for what they are learning in their regular classroom.

A newsletter will be sent home with your child every month to keep you informed on what your child is learning in ESL class or you may check my website on line.

This month, your child will review letter recognition and letter sounds they have been taught in their regular classroom.  Learning to recognize letters and their sounds are necessary before learning to read.  Accordingly, both the homeroom teacher and I will spend a lot of time learning to recognize letters of the alphabet and the sounds that each letter makes. We have reviewed the letters Ll,Oo, Gg,Hh, Tt, Pp.

Also, in preparation for reading, we are learning to recognize the difference between a letter and a word.  We are also learning the sight words I, a, my, it, the, and is.

Your child is learning the names associated with different types of feelings such as happy, sad, surprised, scared, angry, shy and sleepy.  Learning the names for different parts of our body has also been a focus point such as head, face, arms, and legs.

Mountain Language is an important beginning of each day in ESL class. It is a supplemental program intended to develop-oral language skills through listening, speaking, and sharing ideas

First and Second Grade News

Your child will attend ESL class everyday for approximately 50 minutes.  During this time, your child will receive instructional support for what they are learning in their regular classroom.

Beginning readers need a lot of practice.  In ESL class, your child will receive extra practice on the sight words they are learning that week in their regular class.

We also will learn and practice skills that help with unfamiliar vocabulary words, reading comprehension as well as learning and applying phonetic skills to decode (sound out) words.

Mountain Language is an important beginning of each day in ESL class.  Mountain Language is a daily grammar review program.  20 grammar skills are reviewed by the end of each week.  The first 10 minutes of each day are spent on Mountain Language.  It is a wonderful way to learn English grammar rules that are used in writing and are CRCT tested skills.

To build reading comprehension with background knowledge First Graders will build understanding of the term  "big rig" ,
what is a farm, and types of animals found on a farm.  Phonetic strategy focus will be  the short vowel sound of a and i.  Types of stories will include fiction and fantasy.
