Alternative, Functional Curriculum based on their IEP
8:00-8:30 Students go with Mrs. Vicki to eat breakfast in the cafeteria.
8:30-9:00 COMMUNICATION SKILL: Monday- Friday. (Expressive and Receptive) The verbal students take turns talking about what they did the evening before. Each student has to tell me one thing that the student said. Jeffrey and Heaven will use the Dynamo augmentative communication device as they are functionally non-verbal. (IEP Goals). On Fridays we go to the library during this time slot.
9:00-10:00 FUNCTIONAL READING: Monday- Friday. The students practice reading from the Kelley Wingate series: Reading and Comprehension Skills. (There are copies prepared in the room, on the table beside the restroom.) We split the class into two groups based on reading ability. The other group works on functional word recognition and phonics based on their IEP Goals.
10:00-10:40 FUNCTIONAL MATH: Monday-Friday. The students work on telling time skills, using money skills, calculator skills, number recognition skills depending on ability level. Some students work from the PCI series Fast Food Math. They use calculators to add food prices; they then use money manipulatives to pay the total price. Jeffrey and Heaven work on number recognition, sorting by shapes, categorizing, number puzzles, etc. (IEP Goals) On Thursdays during this time slot we cook in the Home Living Area of our classroom. We also work on Home Living skills – washing, folding, cleaning, etc.
10:40-11:40 At 10:40 EDMARK FUNCTIONAL READING SERIES/SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES Monday-Friday. The students work on Edmark warning and safety sign words using the Edmark Functional Reading Series – Worksheets on top of shelf by the door. We also work on map skills, Georgia and State studies, and low level physical science. (In this time slot on Thursday we cook – cookies, brownies, cake, etc. See green recipe book by microwave.)
11:10-11:40 ADAPTIVE PE: Monday- Friday. I take the students to the gym, while there is no one there. We play adaptive volleyball, basketball, kickball, etc. They get extra strikes, extra time to run bases, make sure they succeed. (IEP Goals)
12:20-1:30 FUNCTIONAL LIFE SKILLS: Monday- Friday. The students engage in a variety of life skill jobs. Sweeping, folding, wash clothes, washing dishes, etc. Deanna, Lexy, Kyla, and Adamaris leave to go to connections class at 1:20.
1:30- 2:30 SOCIAL SKILLs: Monday-Friday. The students play various educational games such as: You Tell Me, Budget Town, All About You, etc. They practice taking turns, social interaction, helping each other, and communication in an informal setting.
2:30- 3:20 Students leave in this time frame. Several ride mini-buses and leave before 3:00. Heaven is the last to leave , she rides the Boys and Girls Club Bus. While waiting for bus, if they are done with other work, they get free time to play on computer, read, draw, or choose a game.
