How to simplify fractions

How to simplify fractions:

24

48

Step 1).  Create a factor tree and identify the prime factorization of both the numerator and denominator.  This can be done with any factor pair that equals that number.  (Below, 48 has been completed two ways, but the answer is still the same.)

24                                                 48

2).  Write the prime numbers that make up each number next to the origional fraction.  Circle or cross out all the factors that they have in common.

1            1              1              1

24: 2 x 2 x 2 x 3

48: 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 3

1             1             1                             1

3).  Multiply what is left for the answer.

24: 1 x 1 x 1 x 1       =  1

48:  1 x 1 x 1 x 2 x 1     2
