ELA Common Core Standards
The ELA standards are a set of performance standards for English language arts and literacy. The standards establish a foundation of what students must be able to read and write so that all students are ready for the demands of college and career level communication no later than the end of high school. Students read many classic and contemporary literature as well as challenging informational texts in all subjects. The standards require critical types of information for all students. The ability to write arguments based on evidence from the text, reasoning, and relevant evidence is a cornerstone of the writing standards.
The standards require that students gain, evaluate, and present a growing amount of information, ideas and evidence through listening and speaking as well as through technology. The standards help prepare students for real life experiences at college and in 21st century careers. The standards recognize that students must be able to use formal English in their writing and speaking but that they must also be able to make informed, skillful choices among the many ways to express themselves through language.
