Sixth grade is the first year of a two year World Area Studies course. Sixth grade students study Latin America, Canada, Europe, and Australia. The goal of this two year course is to acquaint middle school students with the world in which they live.
My students will competing in a MyOn Reading competition between all my classes to see which class can read the most books by the end of the day on May 29. All the books they read should have a Lexile level of 700 or above.
The winning class will receive an ice cream party the last week of school. Happy reading!
Welcome to 6th Grade Social Studies! I am looking forward to a great year. There are all kinds of resources on here that we will be using regularly in class. However, I will be uploading the vast majority of our assignments from day to day on Edmodo.
I will be going over Edmodo more in class in the coming days. This year will involve the implementation of a program focued on writing across all subject areas in preparation for the new Georgia Milestones assessments.

This week our main focus will be on ending the unit with Latin American Revolutionary leaders. We will review on Wednesday and take the test on Thursday. Friday will be a half day.
The main focus on this week was on Australian History concerning the Aborigines and the colonization of Australia by Capt. James Cook and the English in 1770. Resources for this week are located in the Australian Unit Resources.
This week we are starting a new unit on World War I and World War II. The focus for Monday and Tuesday will be on the events leading to WWI. The focus for Wednesday through Friday will be on the aftermath of the war. We will start doing gradecam assignments in class instead of taking them home for homework.
This week we are finishing up reviewing and enriching our knowledge over geography. Tuesday we will be testing over Geography. Wednesday we will be in the library doing a scavenger hunt using Culture Grams. Thursday and Friday we will be using the iPads to create brochures about countries using the World Factbook on CIA.GOV.
This week we have started a new domain concerning History that will take us into next semester. We are starting this week with a unit on European Exploration and Colonization. So far, we have taken a pretest on History and completed assignments/guided notes on European exploration.
We are focusing on finishing up our unit over the first part of Latin American History. On Monday we did a reteaching lesson over the Aztecs and Incas using tools on Studyisland.com. On Tuesday we finished guided notes on slavery in the Americas and the social hierarchy system in Latin America. On Weds we will work on the study guide and learn about the religion and languages of Latin America. Thurs will be review and Friday will be the test.
This week our focus in class is on reviewing geographical concepts because this domain will be 31% of the Georgia Milestones test this Spring.
We will also be discussing the independence movements in Canada and Quebec.
The focus of this week will be on introducing key government and economic terms in prepartation for the GA Milestones Test. Students will complete a variety of assignments related to the content to better understand the meaning of these words.
The instructional focus for this week will be on finishing up our small unit over government and economic vocabulary terms. We will take a quiz over this material on Wednesday. Then we will begin to dive into the types of government we see in Europe.
