The Level I language course focuses on continued development of communicative competence in the target language and understanding of the culture(s) of the people who speak the language. It assumes that the students have no knowledge of the target language.

We will strive to reach our goal by meeting the American Council of the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) guidelines.

 1. Communicating in Spanish 

 2. Gaining knowledge and understanding of cultures of the Hispanic world 

 3. Connecting with other disciplines and acquiring new information 

 4. Developing awareness of similarities and differences (comparisons) among language and culture systems around the world 

 5. Using Spanish to participate in communities at home and around the world

 

* By the end of Level I, students will exhibit Novice-Mid level proficiency in speaking and writing and Novice-Mid level proficiency in listening and reading (ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, 1999).

 

Students at the Novice-Mid proficiency level are able to engage in a number of communicative tasks by creating with the language in straightforward social situations. You will be able to survive in the Spanish-language culture.  For example, you should be able to relay basic information about yourself and your family; you will be able to discuss some daily activities, personal preferences, and immediate needs, such as ordering food, making simple purchases, and asking a few appropriate questions. Students at this proficiency level can often be understood by sympathetic native speakers, particularly by those accustomed to dealing with non-natives.
