English Language Arts (ELA) is the combination of letters, letter sounds, sight words, CVC words, reading comprehension, and writing skills.
Each year we begin by introducing letters and letter sounds. Once the students become familiar with letter sounds they quickly learn to put the sounds together to read simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words.
We also utilize this time to teach Sight Words. Sight words are words that are not intended to be sounded out. We teach the students to recognize these words by sight only. We use our current reading series, StoryTown, to teach sight words, reading comprehension, and writing.
