10th Literature and Composition is a rigorous, performance-based, interactive course focused on the study of literary genres including short story, novel, poetry, drama, and nonfiction. Works will be studied thematically. Representative literary works are surveyed for content, style, form, diction, and relevancy to our time and culture. Various print and non-print texts from many cultures and subcultures will be discussed and analyzed through written, verbal, and non-verbal methods. Emphasis is placed on the development of critical and analytical thinking skills through classroom discussion of texts, writing, and presenting. Outside reading and the study of vocabulary are required in this course. Additionally, students will practice the writing process and produce works that include literary analysis, argument, and research examples. Assignments, activities, and assessments will provide practice toward mastery of 10th Grade Common Core Standards.
