Welcome to our Math class! I hope that you love learning Math as much as I love teaching it!
You will quickly see that math class is a very busy class. We will be participating in very engaging activities that will build your child's understanding of math skills that they are going to need in everyday life. We will take everyday life situations and make mathematical connections to them. The Georgia Milestones Assessment is the new standardized test. It has replaced the CRCT. My goal is not only to prepare your child for this test with the instructional activities we do each day, but prepare them to be a problem sovler that uses basic math skills in the real wold.
As a parent helping my own child through math, I understand the frustrations on each side. It is dificult to help your child at home because you were not taught the way math is taught today. For most of us adults, math was taught as a memorization of steps to problem solving. Today, students are taught to be thinkers and problem solvers. The basic skills are embedded in this process. As we go along through the year, there will be instructional pages and video clips that will be on the webpage for you to review with your child. Students will always have paper copies of examples and notes from class that you can refer to when working with them.
I can not stress enough the importance of multiplication fluency. From the beginning of understanding place value positions there is a connection to multiplication. Please take a few facts each night to practice for memorization. Students are very close to reaching a point in math that without a quick recall of multiplication facts and a solid understanding of the concept of mulitiplication, math becomes almost impossible to progress in. I tell the students almost everyday that each day in math is like building a house. Everyday my goal for them is to be able to place another brick on the foundation of their house to support the walls and roof that they will continue to build for the years to come.
Throughout the year, the meat of our instructional activities will be based upon the units from Engage NewYork. These are rigorous common core instructioanl activities. The design of the units will allow studetns to particapte in learning activites that are like the GA Milestones Assessment, There will be lots of journaling and open ended questions that require students to write out their thinking process and problem solving process. It is not just about the final answer or making a selection from a multiple choice quesiton. These units will be on the web page for you to explore with us as we go along in the classroom.
I look forward to a great year! I am excited about the new test and know that the students are going to like this style of testing also. They will get to really demonstrate their knowledge of math concepts and their understanding of math.
