Math Class

In math, I will be using the Georgia Common Core State Math units, Story of Units from EngageNY, and activities from Jon Van de Walle as a curriculum guide for mathematics. The following units can be found at www.georgiastandards.org.

"MATH": Unit Focus
• STANDARDS

Current Standards:
You can see all K-5 math standards (pdf file) here. Scroll down to Kindergarten.

• Focus of the Week

Check out my "Focus of the Week" sub page under my "Math Class". I have lots of visuals, interactive games, and skill helpers. I update it often. Below is an overview of each of the lessons from Engage NY as they are taught in the classroom.

• Module 1 Lesson 9 - Lesson 10

CURRENT WEEK
W/O 9/7 - 9/11

Lesson 9

Objective:  Within linear and array dot configurations of numbers 3, 4, and 5, find hidden partners.

Lesson 10
Objective:  Within circular and scattered dot configurations of numbers 3, 4, and 5, find hidden partners.

• Module 1 Lesson 7- Lesson 8

W/O: 8/31 - 9/4

Students will count groups of 5 and match to numerals on cards. Compare ways to count to five fingers.

Lesson 7
Objective: Sort by count in vertical columns and horizontal rows (linear configurations to 5). Match to numerals on cards.

Lesson 8
Objective: Answer how many questions to 5 in linear configurations (5-group), with 4 in an array configuration. Compare ways to count five fingers.

• Module 1: Lesson 7 - Lesson 8

W/O: 8/24 - 8/28

Students will sort items into categories. Students will relate the last number of objects counted to name and be the total number of objects counted.

SLO TESTING

Lesson 4
Objective: Classify items into two pre-determined categories.

Lesson 5
Objective: Classify items into three categories, determine the count in each, and reason about how the last number named determines the total.

Lesson 6
Objective: Sort categories by count. Identify categories with 2, 3, and 4 within a given scenario.

• Module 1 Lesson 4 - Lesson 6

W/O: 8/17 - 8/21

Students will sort items into categories. Students will relate the last number of objects counted to name and be the total number of objects counted.

SLO TESTING BEGINS

• Engage NY Module 1: Lesson 1 - Lesson 3

W/O: 8/10 - 8/14

We will learn and practice counting the Math Way.

Click here to see "Counting the Math Way" poster and a video explaining how to count the math way.

Students will sort objects by same / exactly same / not the same. Students will identify how the objects are the same with pattern color and how they are used. Students will also identify how they are different.

Lesson 1
Objective:  Analyze to find two objects that are exactly the same or not exactly the same.

Lesson 2
Objective:  Analyze to find two similar objects—these are the same but….

Lesson 3
Objective:  Classify to find two objects that share a visual pattern, color, and use.

• Module 1 Sums and Differences to 10

Kindergarten will begin in math with "Story of Units" Module 1: Sums and Differences to 10.
