Kindergarten Information Meeting

There will be a kindergarten parent information meeting on Thursday, August 24 at 6:00 pm.  Come and speak with your child's teacher and gain some valuable information that will help your child throughout this year.

Updated Cell Phone/Personal Device Policy

Cell Phones/Personal Devices-Personal devices, while often useful, can be a distraction to the learning process. For this reason, Westside students will be expected to adhere to the following guidelines concerning these items. All phones, personal electronic devices, earbuds, and headphones should stay put away at all times unless specified by a classroom teacher. Simply stated, “put away”, means out of sight. Cell phones, personal devices, earbuds and headphones should not be seen during class or during class changes. There will be times when a teacher allows students to use personal devices.

Violations will be handled as follows:
--1st Violation – Verbal Warning
--2nd Violation – Teacher will take the item and return it to the student at the end of the school day.
--3rd Violation – Teacher will send the phone to the office. Office staff will lock the item in the vault and a parent / guardian will have to come in to retrieve the item.
--Further offenses will be seen as willful disobedience and may result in pink slips and discipline from administration.

Also, since all students are assigned an iPad or other device, Westside assumes no responsibility for lost, stolen, or damaged personal devices. The only way to assure that personal items are not lost, stolen, or damaged is to leave them at home. If a student needs to contact a parent, they may use the school telephones. We greatly appreciate parent/guardian’s assistance and support concerning this matter.

Updated Grading Policy

Grading-Grading percentages are now 55% for tests/assessments, 40% daily grades, and 5% for homework.

The retesting policy has also changed. All first through fifth grade academic classrooms have retesting opportunities for students.

--Retesting is only allowed in first through fifth grade. A failed test can only be retested once.
--Any student is afforded the opportunity to retest one failed test per subject, per quarter.
--Students must participate in teacher or directed studies remediation.
--Retests must occur within 10 days of the failed test.
--Teachers should notify parents of any test failure.
--Retest can earn full credit.
--If close to half or more of the class fails, the material is to be retaught and the test given again for full credit.
--Retesting does not include final exams or benchmark exams.

Updated Attendance Policy

Attendance-- If a student accumulates three unexcused tardies to school, three unexcused check-outs, or any combination of the two, this will constitute one unexcused absence for truancy purposes only. Unexcused tardies and check-outs can be defined as convenience tardies or check-outs.

Remember - Truancy Intervention meetings will be held with parents and students when they reach the 5th unexcused absence. The meeting will be for the purpose of intervening and helping the parents find solutions to the problem of truancy in their family.
