Veterans' Day Program

Our annual Veterans' Day program will be held on Friday, November 10 at 9:30 am.  In the newsletter is a form to fill out if there is a veteran in your family who is able to come and be one of our honored guests. Please send in the form so we can have a count of our guests as soon as possible.  We also need pictures of veterans from your family for our slide show.  You can send pictures to agravett@polk.k12.ga.us.  All pictures must be submitted NO LATER than Friday, November 3.

Fall Carnival

Come out with the whole family to our Fall Carnival/Spooky Science Night on Monday, October 30 from 5:00-8:00 pm.  We will have games, a haunted house, spooky science activities, and our book fair will be open!  This promises to be a fun night for everyone.  Mark your calendar now!

Annual Title I Meeting

We will have two opportunities for you to attend our annual Title I meeting on Monday, October 9.  The morning meeting will be at 9:00 am and the afternoon meeting will be at 5:00 pm.  If you have any questions you can contact our Parent Involvement Coordinator--Candy Meers at the school at (770)748-0831.

Road Closings Due to Law Enforcement Activity 9/29/17

The Polk County Police Department has indicated that the following roads are closed for an indefinite amount of time this afternoon:

Short Road
John Redding Road
Seab Green Road
Friendship Road
Highway 100
Cave Springs Road
Santa Claus Mountain Road

The following bus numbers are not allowed to deliver to these roads:
23-11
24-02
21-04

If your residence is located on these roads, your child will remain at their school. Please feel free to pick your child up at this time. Personnel will remain at school until we are given clearance to run these routes. We apologize for this inconvenience, but the safety of our students is our top priority.

Parent Resource Center

We would like to invite you to visit our Parent Resource Center located in the front office.  You can find useful information there on a variety of topics.  It is open each day 8:30-2:30.  Books and materials can be checked out through Candy Meers, our Parent Involvement Coordinator.  Also please visit her website to gain more information about our parent involvement opportunities.  Click on the Parent Involvement/Title I link on the left side of the Westside page or click on Candy Meers' name under teacher websites.  


Grandparents' Teas

We will hold our annual grandparents' teas next week.  Each day they will be at 1:00 pm.  The schedule is as follows:

--Monday:  Pre-K, kindergarten, and third grades

--Tuesday:  First and fourth grades

--Thursday:  Second and fifth grades

Kindergarten Information Meeting

There will be a kindergarten parent information meeting on Thursday, August 24 at 6:00 pm.  Come and speak with your child's teacher and gain some valuable information that will help your child throughout this year. 


Updated Cell Phone/Personal Device Policy

Cell Phones/Personal Devices-Personal devices, while often useful, can be a distraction to the learning process. For this reason, Westside students will be expected to adhere to the following guidelines concerning these items. All phones, personal electronic devices, earbuds, and headphones should stay put away at all times unless specified by a classroom teacher. Simply stated, “put away”, means out of sight. Cell phones, personal devices, earbuds and headphones should not be seen during class or during class changes. There will be times when a teacher allows students to use personal devices.

Violations will be handled as follows: 
--1st Violation – Verbal Warning
--2nd Violation – Teacher will take the item and return it to the student at the end of the school day.
--3rd Violation – Teacher will send the phone to the office. Office staff will lock the item in the vault and a parent / guardian will have to come in to retrieve the item.
--Further offenses will be seen as willful disobedience and may result in pink slips and discipline from administration. 

Also, since all students are assigned an iPad or other device, Westside assumes no responsibility for lost, stolen, or damaged personal devices. The only way to assure that personal items are not lost, stolen, or damaged is to leave them at home. If a student needs to contact a parent, they may use the school telephones. We greatly appreciate parent/guardian’s assistance and support concerning this matter.


Updated Grading Policy

Grading-Grading percentages are now 55% for tests/assessments, 40% daily grades, and 5% for homework.

The retesting policy has also changed. All first through fifth grade academic classrooms have retesting opportunities for students.

--Retesting is only allowed in first through fifth grade. A failed test can only be retested once.
--Any student is afforded the opportunity to retest one failed test per subject, per quarter.
--Students must participate in teacher or directed studies remediation.
--Retests must occur within 10 days of the failed test.
--Teachers should notify parents of any test failure.
--Retest can earn full credit.
--If close to half or more of the class fails, the material is to be retaught and the test given again for full credit.
--Retesting does not include final exams or benchmark exams.


Updated Attendance Policy

Attendance-- If a student accumulates three unexcused tardies to school, three unexcused check-outs, or any combination of the two, this will constitute one unexcused absence for truancy purposes only. Unexcused tardies and check-outs can be defined as convenience tardies or check-outs.

Remember - Truancy Intervention meetings will be held with parents and students when they reach the 5th unexcused absence.The meeting will be for the purpose of intervening and helping the parents find solutions to the problem of truancy in their family.

Pre-K Orientation

Pre-k orientation will be August 4, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. If you are the parent of an upcoming Pre-K student you must attend this meeting.  You do not need to bring your child as the meeting will last approximately 2 hours, and that is a long time for your child to have to sit. Open House is August 7, 2017 from 2-4. This is when you can bring your child to meet his/her teacher. We look forward to meeting you and to a great school year!

Boys and Girls Club Closed

The Boys and Girls Club will be closed Thursday and Friday, May 25-26.  If your child rides the van after school please make sure they have alternative transportation arrangements.

Upcoming Testing Information

Georgia Milestones testing begins next week. We know our students are going to do an outstanding job of showing what they have learned this year. Please make sure your child eats a good breakfast either at home or school and makes every effort to be present at school and on time.

Tech Fair Winners

Congratulations to Jaly Womack and Macy Carter who one first place for graphic design at the tech fair this past Friday.  They will be competing at state in the upcoming weeks!  We are so proud of them!

Blood Drive

Tomorrow is our blood drive through Blood Assurance.  If you would like to give blood you can sign up in our front office or through the website listed on the flyer.

Book Fair

Our annual Winter/Spring Book Fair is next week!  We will have a preview day on Monday for all students.  Our Family Reading Night event will be Tuesday from 5:00-6:00.  We will have activities set up for students and the book fair will be open during this time.  Grandparents are invited to shop with students on Thursday during students' activity times.  The book fair will be open beginning at 8:15 am Monday-Friday.  It will close at 3:00 on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday and at 2:00 on Friday.

Early Dismissal on 1/06/2017

**EARLY DISMISSAL**

Good Evening Parents and Students, due to the threat of inclement weather tomorrow (1/06/2017), Polk School District will operate on a half-day schedule for all faculty, staff and students. Individual schools will dismiss at the same times they did on December 17th leading into the Christmas holidays. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
